School tablets charged at home

Millions of school tablets are charged in children's bedrooms every night.

A new everyday risk

Many schools give pupils tablets and ask them to charge them at home. The tablets are often charged in bedrooms, overnight, with whichever charger and cable is available.

The responsibility question

If a fire starts while a school-owned tablet is charging at home, who is responsible – the school, the municipality, the parents or the supplier? Few schools have clear answers, and few families have been told how to charge safely.

What schools and parents can do

  • Give families clear guidance on safe charging.
  • Supply quality chargers and cables with school devices.
  • Encourage charging outside the bedroom, on a hard surface.
  • Consider an early warning device such as NightEye™ for home charging.
